{"id":800,"date":"2013-02-27T01:04:24","date_gmt":"2013-02-27T07:04:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rickspicscorner.com\/blog\/?p=800"},"modified":"2013-08-08T01:53:44","modified_gmt":"2013-08-08T06:53:44","slug":"history-of-photography-in-the-20th-century-journal-entry-27-feb-13","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.artistrichardcuster.com\/blog\/history-of-photography-in-the-20th-century-journal-entry-27-feb-13\/","title":{"rendered":"History of Photography in the 20th Century Journal Entry &#8211; 27 Feb 13"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The professor crossed into another world today by bringing forth G\u00f6del\u2019s Incompleteness Theorem.\u00a0 The theorem is actually 2 parts \u2013 the first states that no mathematical system can prove every truth about itself while the second states any system that can prove itself using its own logic will contain contradictory statements within that system.\u00a0 It is this first part of the theorem that holds the interesting application to photography (and, perhaps, art in general).<\/p>\n<p>The process of photography is not complete without the photographer.\u00a0 The mind and eye of the photographer shape the image that appears in the viewfinder.\u00a0 The shutter is releases and the scene records, yet there is a piece missing from the frame.\u00a0 That piece is the photographer.\u00a0 It is assumed the photographer is there, but it cannot be proven.\u00a0 In order to prove the photographer, another image (system) must be created in order to prove the photographer\u2019s truth.\u00a0 Of course, this creates a problem because a new system would need to be created in order to prove the complete truth of the preceding image.\u00a0 The photographer cannot validate himself within the image he creates.<\/p>\n<p>Proving everything requires infinity.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s put it another way.\u00a0 The frame provides the boundary in which the image (system) exists.\u00a0 What falls outside the frame is still part of the image.\u00a0 This is so because the photographer (who is part of the image as the creator) made the decision of whether to include it or not in the scene.\u00a0 The system given cannot prove the elements outside the frame.
